Still Breaking Out & Can't Find the Culprit? 5 Tips to Consider!
“I’ve been consistent… so why am I still breaking out?”
Acne is complex. It’s influenced by hormones, skin barrier health, inflammation, lifestyle, ingredients, and timing. Being on a routine for months doesn’t automatically mean your skin has finished healing or that the routine is still the right one for where your skin is now.
Let’s break down the most common reasons breakouts can still happen, even with consistency.
1. The life cycle of acne and healing.
Skin doesn’t renew overnight. Acne has a life cycle of up to 90 days meaning it can take a full 90 days to see progress, reduced acne lesions and healed skin.
If you started with deep congestion, micro-comedones (lesions you can’t see yet) may still be surfacing months later. That doesn’t mean the routine isn’t working. It may mean your skin is still clearing what was already trapped underneath.
2. It’s not purging anymore — it’s reacting
True skin purging can last up to 90 days. After that, continued breakouts usually point to something else.
Common triggers we see:
-
Hidden, sneaky pore-clogging ingredients
-
Over-exfoliation weakening your skin barrier
-
Using “acne” products that are actually too harsh
- Energy drinks, certain supplements or something you're consuming that keeps triggering the acne process within your pores.
3. Your routine worked at first but your skin has changed
Skin is not static. Hormones shift, stress changes, seasons change, life changes.
What we see often:
-
A routine that cleared acne initially but now feels “stuck”
-
Skin becoming more inflamed, dry, or reactive over time
-
Breakouts moving to new areas based on hormones, stress, lifestyle ect.
When this happens, your routine usually needs adjustment, not a full reset.
4. Hormones are still driving the breakouts
Topicals can do a lot but they can’t fully override internal hormonal fluctuations.
Hormonal acne often:
-
Shows up on the chin, jawline, or neck
-
Flares around your cycle
-
Feels deeper, more tender, or cystic
This doesn’t mean your routine is failing, it means your skin needs support, patience, and the right treatment plan!
5. Your skin barrier is compromised
One of the biggest mistakes we see is applying too harsh of topicals or using active ingredients too much too fast.
Signs your barrier may be struggling:
-
Breakouts that are red, angry, or slow to heal
-
Skin feels tight and irritated
-
Products suddenly sting or burn
This is when we recommend doing our Barrier Rehab Protocol. Use gentle, non-exfoliating products only for 2-4 weeks then slowly introduce actives back into your routine once your skin has healed.
